We asked our clients and they told us their experience at Kells has been:

  • “Warm”
  • “Comfortable”
  • “Effective”
  • “Friendly”
  • “Supportive”
  • “Life changing”

Counselling is always individualized. You and your therapist will establish goals for your counselling and determine the steps you will take to get there. Together, you and your therapist will find out what you are comfortable with and what works for you. In therapy, you will gain greater self-awareness and learn new strategies, new ways of thinking, and new perspectives.

Talking is an important part of therapy, however, therapy is not just about talking. The therapeutic process includes how you share your feelings and experiences, how you experience therapeutic activities, and how you relate to your counsellor. This process is important and provides a unique and effective way to promote change in how you interact with others, yourself, and the world.

As the client, you are in charge of your therapy. Counselling is a collaborative process where you and your therapist will work together. Your therapist may assign homework: tasks to practice, worksheets to complete, journaling, or a book to read. These activities help you apply or test what you’ve learned in session, in order to initiate change in your life.

Depending on your specific needs, therapy may be short or long term. Therapy usually takes the form of regular sessions that are weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Some clients may return periodically to check-in with their therapist if they notice symptoms or patterns returning, or if they experience an unexpected life change.

Several of Kells’ psychologists are trained in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), an effective therapy for treating trauma, anxiety, grief, and eating disorders, among other concerns. All Kells therapists who provide EMDR are certified and trained. For more information see Trauma Recovery.
