Counselling Rates

Payment for private counselling is not covered under Alberta Health Care. However, most benefit plans provide partial to full coverage for Psychological Services. Our administrative staff will provide you with a receipt that contains all the necessary information for your insurance company.

Kells private client fees are based on the fee schedule recommended by the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta.

Rates listed are effective as of January 1st 2023 and are subject to change. Our administrative staff will confirm pricing when you contact us.

Couples/Family Counselling with a Registered Psychologist or Registered Provisional Psychologist: $220 per hour

NOTE: EMDR and Couples Counselling are recommended to be 1.5 hours in length.

24 Hour Notice / Missed Appointment Policy

Kells maintains a 24 hour cancellation and missed appointment policy that is reviewed upon intake and signed in your initial session. Kells cannot direct bill any insurance company for missed appointments or late cancellation fees, and as such, the client will be required to pay the entire fee.

Cancellation with more than 24 Hours Notice

Cancellations with more than 24 hours are perfectly acceptable and we are happy to assist you to find a time and date that work better for you.

Cancellation with less than 24 Hours Notice

Clients are responsible for a 50% administrative fee per hour of booked time for late cancellations, barring an emergency or severe weather.

Missed Counselling Appointments

Clients are responsible to pay the total cost of the session if they cancel with less than an hour notice or do not show up for their appointment.

Missed Assessment Appointments

Change or cancellation of an assessment session, with less than 24 hours’ notice, will be billed or a minimum of three hours of assessment service time.

Community Assistance Program

Discounted services may be available through organizations partnered with Kells. We work with churches, community groups, health professionals, other EPIC agencies, and employers to build unique rate packages and individualized programs to meet the specific needs of their clientele. Contact Kells office for more information.

Payment Methods

Kells accepts Cash, Debit, Master Card, and Visa.  Payment must be received in full in advance of each appointment.

Insurance Coverage

Kells Counselling is pleased to offer direct billing to some third-party funders.

Some health benefit plans allow for direct billing from Kells to cover all or a portion of your session. Only some insurance plans permit direct billing (see our list below). If we are unable to direct bill your health benefit plan for any reason, you will have to pay for your session and submit your receipt to your insurance provider for reimbursement. It is important that you ensure your plan covers psychological services before you come in for your appointment, as payment is always due at the time of your appointment.

Third Party Billing

In some cases, fees may be covered through a third party and billed directly to third party payors. In the past, we have worked with lawyers, Section B, churches, and employers for payment. Prior to appointments being booked under this arrangement, Kells accounting department will contact the third-party payor to confirm billing procedures.

Section B Billing

The Alberta Insurance Act requires that the individual’s private health benefit plan is exhausted before Section B coverage can be accessed. As such, the first sessions may be the responsibility of the claimant. After exhausting your health benefit spending, and portion not paid by your health benefit plan will be billed to your auto insurance through Section B.

If the insurance company or the health benefits plan do not allow direct billing, the client will pay Kells directly and submit their receipt for reimbursement. If we can direct bill for services, we will do so.

If you don’t have health benefits, we bill your auto insurance company directly.
